Abi Maddox, MS, PSM is a lecturer and technology coordinator in the Health Informatics and Health IT (HIHIT) Program for the McCombs School of Business. Her role introduces students in the Fundamentals of Health IT course to electronic health record (EHR) systems, health information exchange and interface engines, Health Level 7 (HL7) message structures and interoperability. Abi teaches healthcare data analytics labs in the Health Informatics and Analytics course, where she introduces students to synthetic patient data analysis with Excel and Tableau, and database querying using SQL programming. In addition, Abi teaches a course on the Fundamentals of Health IT for undergraduate Management Information Systems majors. Her research interests include health information technology and systems adaptation, social determinants of health, and public health disparities on maternal and infant mortality.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management with a minor in Healthcare Information Systems from Grand Valley State University (2018), Abi Maddox earned a Professional Science Master's Degree in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics from GVSU (2021). During her time as a Medical Informatics Intern at the Interoperability Institute and Health Informatics Graduate Research Assistant at GVSU, she developed practical skills in the development of interoperability and research of quality improvement on hospital outcome measures.
Her experiences include working with healthcare data, information systems, and numerous EHR software systems from her career in healthcare information technology and management, where she is inspired to continue growing in the field of health informatics, while sharing knowledge with those interested in pursuing a career in the field.
