Biography

Michael Sury is managing director for the Center for Analytics and Transformative Technologies and an associate professor of practice in finance at The University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. He also leads the graduate MSBA track in Financial Analytics.

Sury has taught courses on a variety of topics, including financial modeling and testing, introduction to financial analytics, decision analytics, and investment theory. He previously served as a full-time dean’s executive professor of finance at Santa Clara University, a lecturer at San Diego State, and a visiting scholar/adjunct professor of economics at the University of California.

Prior to his career in academia, Sury worked in technology research and development, building AI programs and designing intelligent systems architectures at MCC, the research consortium organized by tech heavyweights such as GE, Boeing, Microsoft, Lockheed, and AMD. He later worked for Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. on classified projects under the U.S. Department of Defense’s Strategic Defense Initiative; and IBM, where he taught and implemented statistical process control and real-time analytics for manufacturing engineering across the company’s PC production line.

Sury’s research on the optimization of traditional and alternative investments is featured in the anthology, “Essential Readings in Applied Financial Economics.” He has delivered more than 80 conference speeches in the U.S. and internationally, and he has appeared on all four major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) as well as on Bloomberg and CNBC for his insights and commentary on financial analytics and the capital markets.

Sury earned a B.A. in economics from the University of California Santa Cruz and an MBA in finance and statistics from the University of Chicago.
