Steve Goodson is an assistant professor of instruction in accounting at The University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. He teaches the practice of internal audit to graduate students in the Master in Professional Accounting program. 

A certified internal auditor, Goodson provides consulting and contract services to clients in the public and private sectors, including quality assessments, internal audit training, and interim CAE services. 

Goodson, who also provides ethics training in the public sector, previously held senior-level audit roles in Texas government, including at the Department of Public Safety, the Commission on Environmental Quality, and the University of North Texas System.

Goodson has held numerous leadership roles in industry organizations, including the Institute of Internal Auditors, an international association focused on the profession. He has been a member of the board of governors and the International Committee of Research and Education Advisors for IIA, among other roles, and he was principal author of IIA’s practice guide, The Role of Auditing in Public Service Governance. Goodson has been recognized for his contributions to the profession with awards from IIA and state government departments.

A sought-after speaker and educator, Goodson co-founded the Internal Audit Leadership Development Program, a six-month program that prepares senior internal auditors in Texas state government for leadership roles. Many graduates have gone on to become chief audit executives in government.

Goodson earned an MBA in strategic management from the University of North Texas and a B.A. in sociology and general business administration from Stephen F. Austin State University.
